How Can severe Knee Arthritis Be Treated?

I am a 54 year old male and was told 3 years ago I have arthritis in my left knee. Recently it became somewhat tender one evening and the next two days, so far, it is swollen, very tender and can barely walk on it. I also have high uric acid. Is there a way to determine if this is one or the other causing the swelling and pain?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello
Thank You for the query at HealthcareMagic

Acute onset of joint pain and swelling with high uric acid level is indicative of gouty arthritis(gout). It is due to the formation of uric acid crystals within the joint.
Confirmation of diagnosis requires x-ray of the joint, and joint fluid aspiration and analysis.
You can take ibuprofen (if not allergic) for pain.Apply cold compress and take adequate rest.
Schedule an appointment with your primary care physician as soon as possible for proper evaluation and long-term management.

Hope I was able to help you
Please address any more concerns
Regards,
Dr.Lekshmi
